Bregenzer Festspiele

Welcome to Bregenz

Bregenzer Festspiele

Located in the heart of Europe, on the shores of Lake Constance and surrounded by an impressive mountain landscape, Bregenz and its festival offer a unique combination of nature and culture, paired with entertainment and relaxation. The attraction for many renowned artists and culture enthusiasts is the play on the lake. The first Bregenz Festival Week took place on two gravel barges in 1946, one year after the end of the Second World War. At that time, Bregenz did not yet have a theater. The emergency solution of choosing Lake Constance as the stage proved to be a great success and even then the Vienna Symphony Orchestra was involved as the festival orchestra. Four years later, the Bregenz Festival was given its first home - on a stage island standing on wooden pilots. Today, Bregenz has the largest lake stage of its kind in the world. With outstanding stage sets, such as the oversized blue eye from Tosca in 2007 and 2008, or a skeleton rising out of the water from Verdi's opera A Masked Ball in 1999 and 2000, the Festival never ceases to amaze with its breathtaking scenery. The unique acoustics and, last but not least, the hand-picked cast have allowed the Bregenz Festival to make history over the course of its almost 70-year tradition. Make your visit to an opera performance a truly exclusive and unforgettable experience. We will of course be happy to help you plan your individual opera trip.
