Sonya Yoncheva

Sonya Yoncheva, born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, is one of today’s most acclaimed sopranos. After studying piano and voice in her hometown, she earned her Master’s degree in singing at the Conservatoire de Genève. Her international breakthrough came in 2010 when she won Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition, receiving both the First Prize and the special CultureArte Audience Award. Since then, she has established herself on the world’s leading stages, performing at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra national de Paris, and many others. Renowned for the breadth of her repertoire and her expressive artistry, Yoncheva has been honored with numerous distinctions, including the Echo Klassik “Newcomer of the Year” (2015), the International Opera Awards Readers’ Award (2019), the Opus Klassik “Singer of the Year” (2021), and an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv (2023).
